Mini Session Prep Guide
I am excited to be working with you and I can’t wait for our time together during your Spring mini session!
My goal is to make this a fun, relaxing experience. The tips below will allow you to have the best possible session. Remember, no single session is perfect, and it does not have to be! I do my very best to make sure your pictures don’t look awkward. Instead, I will give you gentle direction and tell you what to do, if needed, and then you make it your own. I will help you with where to place your hands, where to look, etc. My gentle assistance allows you to pose naturally and leaves you free to be yourselves! Your job is to love on your family and just have fun!
I know we only have 15 minutes together and we will use that time to get some amazing pictures you'll cherish forever.
No pressure, just relax and be YOU! This is going to be easy & fun!
MY GOAL IS TO MAKE YOU FEEL
CONFIDENT & PREPARED
ARRIVE EARLY
Please arrive at least 10 minutes before your session time so you are ready to shoot AT your scheduled time (meaning having your kids in their outfits, hair fixed, face wiped, etc.) Also, some locations may have limited parking. Please leave yourself enough time to park and walk if need be.
Sessions are booked back-to-back, so if you are late, you will only have the remaining time to complete your session. This is so important! Shooting time will be 15 minutes. If you are late to the session, I cannot go past your end time to make up for it, so please keep that in mind!
WHEN YOU ARRIVE
I will likely be working with the client booked before you when you arrive. Please do not disrupt that session. I will be with you once their session is complete!
WHAT TO WEAR
LOOK GOOD, FEEL GOOD
You might be REALLY tempted to go out and buy a whole new outfit (believe me, I’m all for an excuse to buy new clothes!) but you might consider wearing some of your favorite pieces that you already have! Feeling comfortable in your clothes is going to make such a huge difference to how you act in front of the camera. Wearing something that you already know you love will give you that boost of confidence that you might need!
If you do decide to go get something new, wear it around the house first and make sure there is nothing annoying about the clothes that you fell in love with at the store. If you find yourself constantly fidgeting with straps, hemlines, pants riding up, itching etc. consider wearing something else. Make sure you check yourself out in all angles so there are no surprises and have some friends that you trust give you honest opinions! We could have THE BEST time (and we probably will) on our shoot and you could feel great, but if you get the pictures back and there is some “unflattering” aspect of your outfit, you probably won’t be happy with the images. So make sure you love how you look and feel in the clothes that you pick out! That goes for you too men (and the kiddos)!

TIPS FOR LOOKING YOUR BEST
As you’re coordinating your outfit with your family, keep in mind that your outfits will look the most cohesive on camera when the color palette and wardrobe pieces coordinate, but don’t actually “match.” I recommend that you avoid thinking about “matching,” and instead think about what “fits” together. This will create more visual interest, and allow each personality to shine through. The goal for coordinating a family is to visually break up the colors and shades so that you’re not all wearing the same color on top and bottom. The more we can mix that up, the better. I encourage you to think about planning each outfit with “dominant colors” and “accent colors” in mind.
Colors….When choosing colors for your outfits, I recommend selecting softer, lighter tones and more muted shades. By avoiding ultra-bright, bold colors, and big patterns it will help bring all the attention to your faces and let the eye focus on the way you feel about each other. The camera loves shades of soft pink and green, and muted blues, mixed with sophisticated light neutrals like heather gray, creams, brown, tan, and white. That softer color palette fits beautifully into almost all natural outdoor environments.
Solid color outfits tend to look better than prints, which can be distracting and overwhelming. If you do go with a print, make sure it’s not too loud! If you are a bold person, opt for a super fun pair of shoes or showcase it with your accessories!
Dresses and skirts flatter the female body. If dresses are not your thing and you hardly ever wear one, don’t feel pressured to wear one if you want the photos to look sophisticated! There are other ways to achieve that look without going outside of your comfort zone! You want to look like yourself in these pictures. Remember, feeling comfortable and confident is key!
Avoid tight fitting clothes that might highlight areas that you’d rather not have highlighted. For example, I have a mommy tummy, so I stay away from really tight shirts when I wear low riding pants, or I layer with blazers or cardigans/sweaters, and tend to tuck my shirt in on one side.
For the guys! Long, fitted pants and closed-toed shoes are the most sophisticated looks for men. They draw attention away from his legs and feet and place it where you want it: on his handsome face. So, for your session, it’s best to leave the shorts, sandals and jeans at home, too, as well as any pants that are loose or baggy. Fitted dress pants or fitted colored pants work best on camera. Solid shades of gray or navy are a strong complement to most women’s outfits, whereas pinstripes or plaid patterns tend to distract the eye. I also recommend staying away from graphics and logos on clothing.
Consider the weather! Make sure you’re prepared with a cute coat/sweater if it’s chilly or windy!
Don’t forget the accessories! Pairing an accessory or two with your outfit can really bring some extra dimension to your images, and be a nice tie-in when you’re coordinating with a group. Big statement necklaces bring a lot of pop to the photos, while the smaller, delicate ones are not be as noticeable on camera. Belts, headbands, bracelets and earrings bring great visual interest, so choose one or two that don’t compete for attention.
If you’re still stuck, head to my Pinterest board for inspiration and you can send me pictures of your outfit(s) if you want my opinion! When in doubt, ask!
PREPPING THE LITTLE ONES
Before your session, pack a bag with snacks that aren’t messy, water and any small objects (like toys) that might help me get their attention when it’s time for them to look at the camera. If they are old enough to understand you, it’s a good idea to prepare them for what’s to come before the session starts. Explain how much the photos mean to you so they know to be on their best behavior. A lot of families discuss and pick something fun in advance as a treat after the session if they’re good listeners, like an ice cream cone, for example.
*All little ladies wearing dresses or skirts should wear shorts or bloomers underneath.
*If your child is hesitant/shy with strangers, feel free to bring someone who can make your child feel totally comfortable. This person can stand behind me to gain your child’s attention and bring smiles to their face.
It also helps if their bellies are full and they’ve had good rest beforehand. Once you prepare them physically and mentally, then feel free to give them (and you!) grace! They’re little, and I know that some days don’t always go as planned. I've seen it all and will make sure to get you great photos, regardless of their moods. My goal is to make this as fun and stress-free as it possibly can be for you and your family!
fUR bABIES
My fur babies are a huge part of our family, which is why I love when families choose to incorporate pets into their session. Keep in mind that bringing a pet along often means that we'll get less pictures since it's an extra variable to work with during the session.
I suggest bringing someone with you to the session who can help get their attention and hold the leash when your pet isn't a part of the picture. Especially since we only have 15 minutes together, having an extra person there helps tremendously!
I also recommend exercising your pet before the session and bringing their favorite toy or treats! Depending on your pet’s fur type, it might also be a good idea to groom them before the shoot.
A few more tips…
-
Check nails for chipped polish - either reapply or take it all off. TOES, TOO!
-
Makeup tends to photograph a few shades duller so feel free to dial it up a little bit. No need to take it too far (full foundation & contouring aren't necessary if it's not your thing), but I'm a die-hard fan of using a bit of coverup for any pesky blemishes or dark circles.
-
When it comes to tanning before your shoot, my general rule is to come as you are. I believe you are beautiful in your skin – as is. I understand no one wants to look pale in their pictures, but being super orange isn’t a good look either.
If you’re going to get a tan before your session – opt for a professional, natural spray tan. Professional spray tans look better and are often less streaky. Plus, spray tan professionals know how to spray elbows, armpits, and knuckle creases to leave minimal to no color variation.
Also, be aware of any tan lines and how those will look in your chosen outfit.
-
Make sure if you're wearing a bra that likes to play peekaboo, it's one you don't mind seeing in photos. Consider a strapless bra if you're wearing spaghetti straps. To help slim/smooth your figure, consider wearing some shapewear, if desired.
-
Make sure shoes are clean, scuff-free and comfortable. Avoid flip flops and well-worn gym/running shoes.
Inclement Weather
If weather is an issue and we need to reschedule to the designated rain date, this decision will be made approximately 24 hours before your session and I will contact you via email and text.
WHEN TO EXPECT YOUR IMAGES
As soon as possible after your session is complete, I'll start going through your pictures to choose the best ones. The full gallery will be delivered about 2-3 weeks after your session!
